Well
it’s all still out there, so let’s go have a look at it!

Not for you? Hold on!
Can you introduce us to a
science-friendly colleague, friend or family member?
Let’s face it: “science” people can be a breed apart. We often feel like setting the world
straight: “Look: I’m a Science Nut, and
I have a Science Nut’s needs!”
Our club is what we need!
Who is the Start Trek fan -- or even the Harry Potter aficionado -- in your world? Pass us on to them!
While we are expecting adults to respond, all ages are welcome! (As you may know, a 12-year-old Chinese student enrolled in an American medical school this year.)
Our meeting plans
Our
first meeting will happen in early September, 2004. We will probably meet once a month, if
possible on-site at one of our chosen Field Trip areas. Meetings will last 2-3 hours. Our first place and time is TBD.
We
will surely discuss everything and anything on people’s minds at each meeting
but we will always have a pre-agreed-upon “focus topic”. The level of knowledge we expect is only the
basic science literacy of having taken a couple of classes in high school or
college. More than any credentials, we want people with science enthusiasm and
curiosity!
A club house for us could be anywhere from my home/office space in Lincoln Park to a classroom, learning lab, or museum space, to someone’s capacious den, to a bridge line in Phone Space, a WebEx account on the web, or a room at Adler Planetarium. Please volunteer your resources!
Startup Topics
We will keep organizational details
to the minimum as we begin. A neat
first-meeting start for us might be viewing a 30-minute segment from
“Encyclopaedia Galactica”, Carl Sagan’s video fantasy of Faustian Universal
Knowledge from the COSMOS series. Sagan’s vision of “knowledge to span
the universe” was all but fulfilled in the World Wide Web, less than ten years
after his TV series.
We’ve got the plug-in to the Cosmic
Brain. NOW WHAT?
I say, “EXPLORE SCIENCE with some buddies!”
If you’re like me -- vitally interested in science, ecology, futuristics, technology, etc. -- but having few friends who don’t lapse into a coma at the first mention of anything that isn’t the latest adrenaline escapism cooked up by the News Business (did I say that?) – this might possibly be a real coming home for you -- and a lot of others!
Science holds no end of fascination for
those who love to explore!
