5 “Classical Mosquito!”: New Music for a Microcomputer (1982)
In 1984, Robb Murray competed on the Grammy ballot in 8 categories for his record of computer music, “Classical Mosquito!” This was original neo-Baroque music, all composed for a microcomputer, and it was something of a first. It was very well-received and garnered many positive reviews internationally, including this feature story on NPR’S “All Tings Considered.” Its novelty was noted by magazines and, as time wore on, various books -- One example.
Below are 12 of Robb’s short computer compositions. They were written on musical staff paper and then transcribed into a special code called “Orchestra 80.” The computer plays the pieces by itself. This was before the days of graphical music editors.
