Lima JUNE ELLEN MOWREY
SHORT, 82, died at 11:32 p.m. Oct.
23, 2006,
at St. Rita's Medical Center, following a seven-week
illness. She was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Lima to Herbert and Beryl Perkins Mowrey, who preceded her in death. On Dec. 26, 1945, she married Ralph Hummon
Short, who died Feb. 24, 1973. Mrs. Short retired in 1986 as an English, Latin and history teacher. She started her
teaching career at Van Wert High School and then taught for 29 years in Lima schools, including Central and West Junior high schools and Lima Senior High School. She was a life member of Grace United Methodist Church, and its church circles and
Christian Comrades Sunday school class. She received the Lima Education
Teacher of the Year Award for 1979-1980 and the Martha Holden Jennings Award.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Phi Delta
Kappa, the PEO Sisterhood, the American Classical League, Delta Kappa
Gamma Society and the Allen County Retired Teachers Association. She was a
1941 graduate of Lima South High School. She received her bachelor's
degree in education in 1945 and her master's degree in English in 1976, from Miami University, Oxford, where she played lead in
several theater productions. She had also completed graduate studies at Ohio Northern University, Ada, Bowling Green State University and Ohio University, Athens. She enjoyed decades at the
bridge table, extensive travel and cruises, reading and discussing great
works of literature, grand conversations, live theater, high school
basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers and a good laugh. She appreciated various
types of music and for several years held season tickets to the Lima Symphony
Orchestra and the Lima Area Concert Band. She delighted in everything from
Bach to the Beatles and took special pleasure in attending Beatles and Paul
McCartney live concerts. Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Mark)
Spencer, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Diane (Tim) Motter,
of Lima; five grandchildren, Michael (Sallie) Spencer, of Lee, N.H., Kathryn Bott and Karen (Eric) Nelson, both of Colorado Springs,
Colo., Krista (Daniel) Smilek of Athens and
Jennifer (Steven) Parish of Blacklick; five
great-grandchildren, Sydnie Spencer and Tyler
Spencer, both of Lee, N.H., Chloe Bott of Colorado
Springs, Colo., and Elayne Parish and Andrew
Parish, both of Blacklick; two nephews, James
(Karin) Mowrey of Brea, Calif., and Mark (Chantal) Mowrey of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a sister-in-law,
Marguerite Mowrey of Fullerton, Calif.; fellow
teacher retirees, with whom she maintained longtime relationships; and
several other friends, including Wendy Porter of Lima, who was especially
helpful and kind throughout the past year. She was preceded
in death by a brother, Joseph P. Mowrey.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. today at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Curtis will
officiate. Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the charity of the
