K. ELOISE SPEER, 95, died at 7:35 a.m. Oct. 27, 2006, at her daughter's residence, surrounded by her family.

 

She was born May 5, 1911, in Sidney to Durbin W. and Gusta K. Hummel Brown, who preceded her in death. On July 29, 1945, she married J. Herbert Speer, who died Oct. 25, 1972.

 

Mrs. Speer taught at Lima schools for 34 years, the last 14 as a French and world history teacher at Lima Senior High School. She retired in 1976. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church since 1916. She taught Sunday School there for 60 years. She was a member of Mary Circle and WELCA of the church. She was also one of the oldest members of Dorcas-Gleaners Semper Fidelis Sunday School Class.

 

Mrs. Speer was also a member of the National Education Association, Ohio Education Association, the Allen County Retired Teachers and the Ohio Retired Teachers. She was a member of the YWCA, American Association of University Women and Sorosis Club. She was a founding member of Stable Gables, the predecessor of Amil Tellers, and a former member of the Eastern Star Trinity Chapter 16. She was formerly involved with the Literacy Council.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Susan K. (Rev. Jon) Speer-Powers, of Delaware, and Sally A. (William) Speer Leber, of Powell; three grandchildren, Kathryn (Jacob) Gibson, of Cincinnati, Alice (Roy) Leber-Cook of Philadelphia, and Meaghan (Richard) Bryant, of Rome, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Micah Bryant and Noah Bryant of Rome, Ga.; a first cousin, Janis Rohrbaugh of Wapakoneta; a sister-in-law, Nadine Snow; four nieces and nephews, Bev Miller, Candace Snow, Tony Snow and Maggie Snow, all of Lima; and many other loving family members.

 

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. The Revs. Lars Olson and Wesley Runk will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery,

 

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or the Lima Senior High School Scholarship Fund.
