Growing Up in Lima --Published Books

1        The stories of Lynn Lauber, LSH class of ‘70

White Girls (1990) as Web Text on Amazon; B & N in Libraries

                                                 21 Sugar Street (1993) on Amazon; B & N in Libraries

Lynn’s books are poignant stories of the 1960’s, with Lima disguised as "Union, Ohio", and familiar citizens similarly camouflaged.   But you'll still recognize everybody, including many from Lima Senior -- even from our class!

2        Life at Central High -- Part VI of

In the Company of Friends, by Duke Murray (draft)

Book is due out in 2008.

3        Horace Mann and Central -- gone but not forgotten . . .

On-going stories, including Playing Football at Lima Central

Dr. Emmett Murray is an inveterate story-teller about grand old times in Lima. Many of his stories relate the experience of attending Horace Mann school and then Lima Central in the 1930’s.  His most popular story is “What I Learned from a Boyhood Chum.”  Read his tale, “A Saturday Night in the 1930’s, Lima Style” to get a flavor of the book. He is also posting stories that were written since his original book on a website.

4        “Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse” (2005)
          by Phyllis Diller

Phyllis writes extensively about growing up in downtown Lima and includes memories of Lima Central - - she names teachers and attaches labels (and sometimes they ain't pretty . . . poor Gayle Howie . . . ).

Interview with Phyllis Diller at 90: she says a lot about Lima

5        Fading Voices and Haunting Memories (2003)
by Gloria Miller
Includes stories about people in Lima during WWII.

6        Unauthorized Lima -- Mick: Back When (2003),
by Harry Grigsby

When you’ve tired of respectability, have a look at this very unvarnished autobiography of life as she was lived in Lima by a rough-and-tumble guy who definitely did it “his way.”  His activities were not always legal, moral or for a queasy stomach. The book can only be described as “raunchy,” so consider yourself warned. Available at Lima Public Library, or send $25 to the author at 27951 159 Ct., Homestead FL 33031 -- (305) 246-0790.   Some sides of life in Lima that probably only those in the courthouse really knew, or needed to.

Museum Series:
The Allen County Museum conducted a project under the leadership of the popular but now-deceased Jean Engstrom.  Jean was a columnist for the Lima News ("Makes My Heart Smile")  who surely deserves her own web site.  Over a period of several years, she assembled panels of Lima senior citizens and interviewed them in public at the museum.  The interviews are all available as videocassettes for $15 each.   They’re great.  Contact the museum.  Titles include:

Octogenarians (80+ year-old folks) -- excellent!
              Septuagenarians (70+ year-old folks)

WW II

Korean War

Life at Superior Coach

Life at Westinghouse
